To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he has any proposals to reform the GCSE.

My right hon. Friend the Prime Minister recently proposed that greater emphasis should be placed on the GCSE as an externally assessed examination with less emphasis being accorded to coursework. My right hon. and learned Friend will be inviting the School Examinations and Assessment Council to advise him on how to carry forward this proposal.
