To ask the Secretary of State for Defence (1) what notification is given to local fire authorities prior to the transport of nuclear warheads or missiles through the centre of a city;(2) pursuant to his answer of 16 July,

Official Report, column 148, whether the local police force is warned in advance when a nuclear weapons convoy is to pass through their area of responsibility.

Advance notice of the routes and timings of nuclear weapons convoys is kept to a strict minimum for security reasons. Nevertheless, liaison is maintained with those local police forces which might have such convoys passing through their area of responsibility.
