To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his latest estimate of the level of investment in the manufacturing sector.

In the second quarter of 1991 manufacturing investment was £2·5 billion in constant 1985 prices.

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the average quarterly figure for manufacturing investment, including leased assets, in 1979 and the level in the first quarter of 1991, in constant prices.

Manufacturing investment averaged just over £2·7 billion per quarter in 1979. In the first quarter of 1991 it was just under £2·7 billion.
