To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on his policy for having available a pool of British registered merchant ships for emergency defence use.

Current policy for providing merchant ships for defence purposes during crisis and war is to charter commercially on the open market or, where this is not possible, to requisition ships on the British register.
