To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many applications for asylum as listed in his answer of 21 October, Official Report, column 338, were (a) in country and (b) at port of entry on entry in each quarter of 1990 and 1991.

The information requested is given in the table. The figures are for principal applicants excluding dependants. The 1990 figures for after-entry applications understate because of delays in recording, particularly for the fourth quarter.
