To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will make a statement on the number of applications received from businesses in the north-west region for regional selective assistance in 1990–91 and 1991–92.

In the financial year 1990–91 my Department received 354 applications for assistance from businesses in the north-west region under the regional selective assistance scheme. Between 1 April 1991 and 31 October 1991 a further 280 applications were received from businesses in that region.

Note: The north-west region includes the counties of Cheshire, Cumbria, Iancashire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside and the High Peak district of Derbyshire.
