To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what steps he is taking to clarify and safeguard the position of volunteer mountain rescue teams under the European Community draft directive on the liability of suppliers of services; and whether he will make a statement.

The present draft of the services liability directive excludes public safety services, and we are seeking to have this exemption extended to private sector safety services run on a voluntary basis.
