Mr. Nellist
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what consideration his Department has given to re-opening the possibility of applications from Commonwealth citizens who wish to seek British citizenship; and if he will make a statement.
Mr. Peter Lloyd
Commonwealth citizens may acquire British citizenship by naturalisation. I assume that the hon. Member has in mind the entitlements to registration as a British citizen that came to an end on 31 December 1987, in accordance with provisions of the British Nationality Act 1981. We see no reason to review those provisions.
