To ask the right hon. Member for Selby, as representing the Church Commissioners, in the last recorded period of 12 months, what total sum was received in respect of each of the following (a) the reading of banns of marriage, (b) wedding services, (c) burial services and (d) any other fees for performance of priestly functions in Church of England churches.

It is estimated that fees paid to incumbents and parochial church councils for the year to 31 March 1991 totalled £13 million. Of this total it is estimated that £8·1 million related to statutory church and churchyard parochial fees including those for marriages and funerals, £4·6 million to cemetery and crematorium fees and £0·3 million to surrogate fees. I regret that more detailed information is not held centrally.
