To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will list the number of (a) heart transplant, (b) kidney replacement, (c) hip replacement and (d) eye cataract operations carried out in the national health service in (i) 1979 and (ii) the most recent year for which the figures are available; and if he will estimate the figures for 1991–92.

The table gives the number of operations for 1979 and for the latest year available. The rate of heart and kidney transplant operations is dependent on the availability of suitable organ donors. Future numbers cannot therefore be reliably estimated. Information on the projected number of hip replacement and cataract operations is not held centrally.
