To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will publish a table showing the tasks for infantry battalions and the units earmarked to fulfil those tasks up to 1997, indicating the number of battalions required for each task and the number of battalions available to be deployed.

Details of infantry tasks and the battalions available to undertake these tasks are provided in the Command Paper "Britain's Army for the 90s". Future arms plot and emergency tour plot details are classified and cannot therefore be provided but, in most cases, tasks are not allotted to specific units as far ahead as 1997.
