To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many serious accidents involving injury or death of employees have occurred in each major port (a) each year since July 1989 and (b) in each of the previous five years; and how many of these accidents have involved dangerous goods, as defined in the international maritime goods code.

This information is not available in the form requested and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost. The total numbers of injuries to employees in ports notified to the Health and Safety Executive during this period are given in the table. Statistics for 1990–91 are not yet available.
