To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he has any further plans to initiate changes to the remit of NATO; and if he will make a statement.

I refer my hon. Friend to the statement which my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister made to the House on 12 November. The NATO summit meeting in Rome on 7 and 8 November completed the fundamental review of NATO strategy put in hand at the London summit in July 1990. The Government welcome the success of this review which has adapted NATO's role to the changed political circumstances in the new Europe.
