Mr. David Marshall
To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is his estimate of the average typical first-year costs and rates of return for local road safety schemes.
Mr. Chope
A report published by the Transport and Road Research laboratory in 1989 showed that the average local safety scheme cost about £7,000 and saved just over one casualty accident per year, valued at £16,690, where both figures are in 1987 prices.
