To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the number of (a) men and (b) women who are foreign nationals and are at present serving prison sentences in prisons in England and Wales for conviction for seeking to import illegal drugs into the United Kingdom.

The information readily available does not distinguish the different types of drugs offence.On 30 June 1990, the latest date for which information is available, about 1,090 males and 160 females recorded as foreign nationals were held in prison service establish-ments in England and Wales under sentences for drugs offences.
