To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what were the numbers of managerial and administrative staff in the health service in Wales in 1973; and what is the present number.

The available information relates to staff included in the administrative and clerical group for pay purposes. The whole-time equivalent number of such staff in 1973 and 1990 is given in the following table:

The number of nursing and midwifery staff increased from 45 per cent. to 50 per cent. of the total national health service staff in the same period.
