Mr. Maxwell-Hyslop
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what action his Department is taking to bring specifications for new equipment into line with the Department of the Environment's policy of substituting other finishes for solvent-based paints.
Mr. Kenneth Carlisle
My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment is issuing guidance on air pollution standards for coating processes which will be subject to pollution control under part I of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. One of the options considered by the guidance will be to change to low-solvent coatings. My Department is investigating alternatives to solvent-based paints in its own particular circumstances.
