To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what are the implications for the effectiveness of the Polaris nuclear deterrent of the recently upgraded Soviet anti-ballistic missile system around Moscow.

The programme of improvements to the Soviet anit-ballistic missile system reinforces the need for Polaris to be replaced by Trident in the mid–1990s, to ensure that the British strategic nuclear deterrent remains credible well into the next century.
