To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what would be the cost of restoring the right to claim unemployment benefit for carers who have ceased to care; and whether he will make a statement.

The cost of preserving entitlement to unemployment benefit for the estimated 2,600 former carers who seek work and who satisfied the contribution conditions prior to caring would be about £2 million in a full year.
