21.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what steps he is taking to ensure the effectiveness of Her Majesty's Government's nuclear deterrent.

The Government are proceeding with plans to replace Polaris with Trident and intends in due course to update Britain's sub-strategic nuclear capability. Taken together, these measures will ensure that our independent nuclear deterrent remains credible and effective well into the next century.
