37.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the situation in Lebanon and the implementation of United Nations resolution 425.

The situation in south Lebanon appears to have stabilised in the last few days. We condemned the acts of violence which took place in south Lebanon and in northern Israel over the period 14 to 21 February. They served no purpose and led only to needless suffering. We supported the statement by the President of the United Nations Security Council on the 19 February which reaffirmed Security Council resolution 425. We want to see the removal of all foreign troops from Lebanon, the effective deployment of the Lebanese army throughout the country, and the cessation of attacks from Lebanon on Israeli targets.
