To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will give a detailed estimate of the cost of setting up and running a Welsh assembly consisting of 76 members.

Current proposals for an elected assembly in Wales are unspecific. However, extrapolating from earlier figures in the 1975 White Paper, Cmnd. 6348, "Our Changing Democracy", I estimate that costs would be in order of £50 million.
