Tax Yield (Benefits)

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the tax yield from each of the taxable benefits, and the total, for each year from 1978–79 to the latest available at current and at 1991–92 prices.

Available estimates are published in table 9.6 of the 1989 and 1991 editions of the "United Kingdom National Accounts"—the CSO Blue Book, which provide calendar year estimates of total income tax on social security benefits, applying the recipients' average rate of income tax on the whole of their income to the amount of benefits received. These amounts are shown in the table at current and 1991–92 prices.
