To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what actions the United Kingdom representative at the United Nations has taken to ensure that a referendum is held on the future of the Western Sahara.

Following the unanimous adoption of Security Council Resolution 809, the United Kingdom permanent representative has been in touch with the United Nations Secretary-General to offer our support and to encourage him to redouble his efforts with both parties to bring about a referendum by the end of the year. The Secretary-General's special representative, Yaqub Khan, is currently visiting the region.
