To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the average cost of caring for a mentally ill person in (a) a mental illness hospital, (b) a general hospital psychiatric unit, (c) a four-to-six-bed group home, (d) a staffed hospital and (e) in the patient's own home.

The average cost per day of caring for a mentally ill inpatient in 1991–92 was as follows:

Information on the costs of care in four-to-six-bed group homes and in patients' own homes is not collected centrally. The figure for staffed hospitals is the average cost for all hospitals which provide inpatient care for mentally ill persons.
