Mr. Llew Smith
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the implications for the United Kingdom nuclear warhead testing programme in Nevada of the one-year moratorium on nuclear testing approved by the United States Congress.
Mr. Aitken
As my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister made clear on 12 May at column 90, the United Kingdom has a continuing requirement to sustain a minimum programme of nuclear tests to maintain effectiveness and safety of our nuclear deterrent. United States policy is a matter for the United States Administration.
