To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list the regulations which control effluents discharged from abattoirs; which bodies are responsible for monitoring such effluents; and if he will make a statement.

[holding answer 25 June 1992]: Discharges of trade effluent, including those from abattoirs, are subject to control under the Water Industry and Water Resources Acts 1991. Discharges to sewer require the consent of the relevant water service company and those to a watercourse require the consent of the National Rivers Authority. It is the responsibility of the consenting authority in each case to carry out associated monitoring.
