To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what action she will be taking in response to the open letter sent to her by the Greater Manchester Low Pay Unit; and if she will make a statement.
Mr. McLoughlin
The Government will continue to create the right conditions for a prosperous and growing economy. Statutory wage fixing, advocated by the Manchester Low Pay Unit, distorts the labour market and damages employment prospects, particularly those of women and part-time workers.
