To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will list the total number of finished consultant episodes in acute, geriatric and maternity specialties; how many finished with (a) discharge to the patient's usual place of residence, (b) discharge to another domestic address, (c) transfer to another department in the same hospital, (d) transfer to another hospital, (e) death or (f) discharge to a non-domestic address outside the NHS, for each financial year since 1988–89.

[holding answer 23 April 1993]: Figures from the hospital episode system (HES) for 1989–90 are to be published shortly. These will show total finished consultant episodes—ordinary admissions plus day cases —in that year by specialty group. The table shows, for each specialty group, the percentage distribution among valid discharge destination codes. Comparable data for 1988–89 and for 1990–91 and subsequent years are not yet available.
