To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what are the implications for "Options for Change" of the situation in Bosnia.
The Government's plans for force restructuring recognise that new peacetime commitments, including United Nations operations, could arise. We keep force structures under review and, while we will make adjustments if necessary, we have no current plans to do so.
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement about the role of United Kingdom forces in Bosnia.
The role of British forces deployed to the former Yugoslavia in support of the United Nations operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina is to assist the United Nations Commissioner for Refugees with the passage of humanitarian aid and refugees and the International Committee of the Red Cross with the exchange of detainees. Other tasks, such as the evacuation of the sick and wounded, in the spirit of United Nations Security Council resolutions 770 and 776 are also carried out as requested and as circumstances permit. So far 536 convoys escorted by British troops have delivered 36,265 tonnes of humanitarian aid. In addition 7,137 tonnes of aid have been flown into Sarajevo by the RAF.
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what contribution Britain is making to policing the no-fly zone in Bosnia.
The United Kingdom is taking part in the NATO operation to monitor and enforce the no-fly zone over Bosnia in accordance with the provisions of United Nations Security Council resolution 816. We have provided eight Tornado F3 aircraft, with their air-to-air refuelling support to the multinational force. United Kingdom E3-Ds, as part of the NATO airborne early warning force, continue to monitor the no-fly zone.
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what military contribution Britain is making to promote peace in Bosnia.
I refer my hon. Friend the answers I gave earlier today to the hon. Members for Bradford, West (Mr. Madden) and for Croydon, North-East (Mr. Congdon).
