To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many income support recipients aged (a) between 18 and 21 years and (b) 21 and 24 years live with one or more of their parents.

[holding answer 10 May 1993]: It is estimated that in 1991 there were 250,000 18 to 21-year-olds and 100,000 22 to 24-year-olds receiving the single person rate of income support and living with one or more of their parents.

Sources:

1. Caseload estimates for the total number of 18 to 24-year-olds on income support from the 1991 Annual Statistical Enquiry.

2. Information 18 to 24-year-olds living with a parent was obtained using evidence from the 1989–90–91 Family Expenditure Surveys (modelled at 1993–94 prices and benefit levels).
