To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many people were apprehended for smuggling animals into the United Kingdom during 1992.

Precise figures are not available on the number of people apprehended for smuggling animals into the United Kingdom.There were, however, 54 seizures in 1992 of animals being smuggled into the United Kingdom. This figure does not include interceptions by customs of animals subject to rabies controls where subsequent action, as a matter of practice, has been passed to the local authorities.
