Persistent Vegetative State

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many patients are currently categorised as in a persistent vegetative state; and how many such cases were caused by (a) road traffic accidents, (b) physical assaults and (c) other causes.

This information is not collected centrally. However, independent estimates suggest there may be about 1,200 cases in total in the United Kingdom.
