To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the total cost to the Government of the MV Braer incident; and if he will make a statement.

Government Departments—not-ably the Scottish Office and the Department of Transport —have expended considerable sums: additional environ-mental work by Government in Scotland has already cost of the order of £0·75 million. But it is at present too early to say what the Government's overall expenditure will be.
