To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what is the current definition of service industry used by his Department; and if he will make a statement.

Service industry covers the following divisions of the Standard Industrial Classification 1980:

  • Division 6: distribution, hotels and catering,
  • Division 7: transport and communication,
  • Division 8: banking, finance, insurance, business services and leasing,
  • Division 9: other services.
