To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will make a statement on the outcome of her discussions on 27 May with her European Community counterparts on the issue of the advertising of tobacco products.

At the Health Council meeting the Danish presidency concluded after discussions that there remained insufficient support for the Commission's revised proposal for a directive introducing a Community-wide ban on the advertising of tobacco products. There was therefore no vote on the proposal. Discussions will continue under the Belgian presidency on appropriate Community action in support of member states to reduce tobacco consumption.
