To ask the Secretary of State for Health what guidelines she has issued in relation to a British standard for knee and hip joint replacement sets.
Mr. Sackville
There is no single British standard for knee and hip joint replacement implants. National standards are defined through an interrelated system of around 40 British standards for orthopaedic implants and materials. Compliance with appropriate standards is called for in the Department of Health's requirements for quality systems for orthopaedic implants, published in 1990, copies of which are available in the Library.
