To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what is the cost to date and the expected future cost of his Department's market-testing programme; how many staff are engaged full-time in work relating to market testing; which firms of consultants have been used in connection with the market-testing programme; and how they were selected.

The cost to 31 March 1993 has been some £3·2 million and the expected cost for the financial year 1993–94 is broadly estimated at £3·5 million. Currently there are some 150 full-time staff assigned to the market testing programme. The following firms of consultants have been used in connection with the market-testing programme:

  • Kodak
  • KPMG
  • Hemsley Miller and Co.
  • PA Consultancy
  • PE International
  • PMMS Consulting
  • Price Waterhouse
  • SEMA Consultants
  • Shreeveport
  • Symonds Facilities Management
  • Touche Ross
The above were all selected by competitive tender.
