To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what has been the total expenditure by his Department over the past 10 years on items connected with members of the royal family; and what is the itemised breakdown of such expenditure.

The cost to the Department of royal visits overseas at the request of Government Departments during the last 10 years was £4,241,700, broken down as follows:

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the practice of his Department regarding financial assistance for members of the royal family to purchase items of clothing for overseas visits.

The Department provides financial assistance to members of the royal family to cover expenses necessarily incurred in the performance of official duties overseas; this includes a contribution to clothing expenses.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, pursuant to his answer of 21 May, Official Report, column 350, which visits and of what duration were made at Government Department's request during the financial year 1992–93 by (a) the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, (b) the Prince and Princess of Wales and (c) other memnbers of the royal family; and who made each of the visits by other members of the royal family.

Overseas visits were made by the following members of the royal family at Government Department's request during the financial year 1992–93:

(a) The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh:

  • 12 May—France
  • 27–31 May—Malta
  • 13–14 July—USA
  • 9–12 June—France
  • 19–23 October—Germany
  • 11–20 March—Dominica, Montserrat, Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands

(b) The Prince and the Princess of Wales:

  • 10–15 May—Egypt
  • 2–5 November—Korea
  • 5–7 November—Hong Kong
  • 13–15 November—France
  • 17–19 November—France
  • 12–14 February—USA
  • 14–18 February—Mexico
  • 2–6 March—Nepal

(c) Other members of the Royal Family:

Prince Edward:

  • 2–18 October—British Indian Ocean Territory, Brunei, Western Samoa

The Princess Royal:

  • 11–19 May—Finland, Sweden, Norway
  • 10–15 Septembe—India

Princess Margaret:

  • 23–25 June—Netherlands

Duke and Duchess of Gloucester:

  • 12–13 October—Belgium

Duke of Kent:

  • 14–23 May—Japan
  • 30 June-1 July—Italy
  • 9–10 November—Germany

Princess Alexandra:
