To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what discussions he has held with the chairman of British Rail about safeguards to, ensure that all potential purchasers of Red Star Parcels Ltd. have a fair opportunity to bid for the company and that their probity is adequately assessed.

The British Railways Board is handling the sale of Red Star. All bids received by the closing date (13 August) will be given equal consideration by the board and its merchant bank advisers. Final terms of sale to the preferred purchaser will require the Secretary of State's approval.
