To ask the President of the Board of Trade what further steps he is taking to ensure improved safety standards for package holidaymakers using European hotels.

As a result of an EC resolution on fire safety in hotels most member states now have standards similar in general terms to those in the United Kingdom. More generally, the International Federation of Tour Operators has issued two substantial guides, one for operators and the other for owners of holiday accommodation, covering every aspect of safety from fire doors to the depth of swimming pools. These, I believe, will be valuable.

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what further representations he has had from travel businesses about deficiencies in the package travel regulations; and if he will make a statement.
