To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what were the main results of the work of the employment service as a next steps agency in 1992โ€“93; and if he will make a statement.

I am pleased to announce that the Employment Service achieved excellent results in 1992โ€“93. It placed over 1ยท42 million unemployed people into jobs, of whom 24 per cent. had been out of work for six months or more. It also exceeded its targets for paying benefit accurately and promptly to those entitled to it. The Chief Executive of the Employment Service has provided my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State with the annual report and accounts for 1992โ€“93. Copies have been placed in the Library today.
