To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people were prosecuted for road tax evasion offences in each year since 1989.

The following table shows the number of proceedings taken in England and Wales in the years 1989 to 1991 for the offence of "motor vehicle licence—failing to pay appropriate duty":

The number of people involved is likely to be less because some of them may have been prosecuted against for more than one of these offences.Figures for 1992 are not yet available.
