To ask the Secretary of State for Transport when he last met the chairman designate of RailTrack to discuss services on the west coast main line.

Current services on the west coast main line are a matter for the British Railways Board.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what representations Her Majesty's Government have made to European institutions with a view to securing financial support for investment in the west coast main line.

We have recently announced the appointment of Hambros Bank Limited to examine the scope for a joint venture to renew the infrastructure of the west coast main line. During the course of its study it will undoubtedly examine closely the possible use of funds from European sources.
