To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to his answer of 20 July, Official Report, column 174, if he will list the incidents reported to his Department in which academic researchers assigned to Ministry of Defence contracts have been physically attacked as a result of their work.

I will write to the hon. Member on the specific point raised in his question. In the meantime, I can tell him that at a recent meeting with my officials the research councils strongly endorsed my Department's policy that universities should decide whether or not to disclose their receipt of funds from the Ministry of Defence for research contracts.
