To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people have applied for asylum in the United Kingdom in each of the last five years; and of these how many have been granted full asylum and how many have been removed or otherwise left the United Kingdom.

Information on applications for, and grants of, asylum in the United Kingdom in the years 1988–92 is given in table 1.1 of Home Office statistical bulletin issue 19/93 "Asylum Statistics, United Kingdom 1992", a copy of which is in the Library. Available information for 1992 on removals and voluntary departures of asylum seekers is given in table 9.1 of the bulletin. Corresponding information for years prior to 1992 is not available.
