To ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) what discussions he has had with bus operators regarding possible improvements in bus design to increase passenger safety;

(2) what discussions he has had with organisations representing bus passenger users regarding possible improvements in bus design to increase passenger safety; and if he will make a statement.

The prospect of an EC directive concerning bus and coach construction is currently under discussion within the European Commission. All future proposals to change the constructional requirements of these vehicles will have to be agreed by member states.As part of our continuing aim to improve the safety of passengers using these vehicles, we maintain contact with representative organisations of both users and operators.
