To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement in relation to progress being made towards agreement on the proposed European Commission directive on data protection; and in which areas there is still disagreement between member states.
I refer the hon. Member to my reply to a question from him on 31 March at column 220. The Council working party has concluded its initial consideration of the revised text of the draft directive. It has started a second reading, on the basis of a text containing amendments proposed by the Belgian presidency.
