To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make it his policy to ensure that recycled materials of the appropriate specification will be given priority over quarried aggregate in civil engineering projects.

The choice of materials for use in civil engineering projects is a matter for the market. The Government support an increase in the use of waste and recycled materials in construction and are considering how to achieve this as part of the review of minerals planning guidance note 6 on aggregates.
