To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what are the estimated savings made in 1992–93 in Scotland as a result of the introduction of a charge for sight tests.

We estimate that the savings made in 1992–93 as a result of the restriction of the categories of people eligible for an NHS sight test in 1989 were of the order of £9 million.
